OUR ARTISANS
Global Girls products are entirely handcrafted in Kenya by skilled artisans, with each piece reflecting their craftsmanship and attention to detail. Our designs are created by owner Linda Hackett, while the intricate beadwork is done primarily by talented women artisans. We also employ many skilled men who contribute an essential part of the production process, including beadwork and other specialized jobs.
Global Girls’ mission is to support talented artisans through meaningful employment, fair wages, and the promotion of beautifully handcrafted goods made using traditional techniques.
We believe deeply in the power of fair trade and the importance of reliable work. A steady income provides more than financial security, it helps foster independence, confidence, and a greater sense of opportunity for artisans and their families.
When women earn an income, the benefits often extend throughout their families and communities. Many women invest in their children’s education, understanding that schooling is often the path to a brighter future. In Kenya, education comes with costs such as uniforms, books, and learning materials, and without adequate resources, some children may be unable to attend. Our goal is to help ensure that the children of our artisans have the opportunity to go to school and pursue their dreams.
The impact of a woman’s income reaches beyond her children. Women are often caregivers for elderly parents and relatives, and having financial independence allows them to make important decisions for themselves and their families.
Global Girls is proud to pay above fair-trade wages to the artisans we work with. By working close to home—or sometimes from home—artisans can save on transportation, meals, and childcare expenses while balancing their work and family responsibilities.
We partner with artisans in communities throughout Kenya, creating income-generating opportunities. In Kibera, one of Africa’s largest shanti-towns, Global Girls works with artisans who create our horn and bone jewelry. We also proudly purchase directly from our women friends in the Maasai community, supporting their artistry and traditions.
Seeing our products featured alongside exclusive brands in upscale stores is certainly rewarding, but our greatest accomplishment is the growth of our artisan community. From about ten artisans when we began to approximately forty individuals today, Global Girls has become a source of meaningful, ongoing employment for talented craftspeople and their families.
Every Global Girls piece carries a story—not only of beautiful design, but of skill, dedication, and the artisans who bring each creation to life.
